Summary
Surgical treatment for children with epilepsy
Ugeskr Læger 2004;166:3935-3937
Children experiencing recurring seizures despite antiepileptic drug treatment run a high risk of developing cognitive and behavioural problems. Anti-epilepsy surgery is a therapeutic opportunity for these children, but it is performed less often in Denmark than in the neighbouring countries. A comprehensive preoperative evaluation is necessary in order to obtain good seizure outcome, with 50-70% being seizure free after the operation. Early referral is important to alleviate the complications of childhood epilepsy.
